Um … zu is also used after an adjective with zu or genug:
Er ist zu jung, um alles zu verstehen.
He is too young to understand everything.
Er ist alt genug, um alles zu verstehen.
He is old enough to understand everything.
NB If the subject of the two clauses is different, the conjunction als dass is used: Er ist zu jung, als dass wir es ihm erklären könnten (‘He is too young for us to be able to explain it to him’).
10.8 The infinitive without zu
A few verbs can be followed by an infinitive without zu. This infinitive is placed in final position at the end of the main clause:
